I visited Malta, situated in the Mediterranean between Italy in the north and North Africa in the south, in 1996. It was one of those "going somewhere else but Greece" years, to get some change.
Malta has been under British rule too long. Everyone speaks English and the Maltese language is a protected language threatening to die out. The food is very English too.. With that I mean it doesn't taste anything. Absolutely nothing. It's as if they have never heard of spices.
The landscape is rather flat and rather empty. Hills. Some cliffs on the north side. Almost no sandy beaches. Some pretty and picturesque villages and towns, but no nice souvenirs.
It is the most boring place I have ever visited... Sorry, but you couldn't get anything decent to eat and that colors my impression.
I've noticed afterwards that Malta looks rather nice on pictures though ...
